Profile:
Jackie started playing with St Austell Youth Band at the age of eleven on Tenor Horn.  Her first contest was Paignton 1979, and she says that she was so nervous, all she managed to play of the test piece was the last note!  She progressed from 2nd Horn to Ist Horn, and then to Solo Horn.  She played with the Cornwall Youth Brass Band for a few years and contested in London at the Festival Hall and Royal Albert Hall.

When the older players in the Youth Band reached the age of 17-18, the St. Austell "B" Band was formed in 1984 to replace the Youth Band, so that these players could continue.  They progressed from 4th to 3rd Section under Rodney Richards, with Jackie playing Solo Horn.

Jackie moved to Euphonium in 1987, and remained there until the band disbanded in 1990.  She then moved to Indian Queens Band under the late Jimmy Taylor until 1994.

Jackie then had her two children and, after a few years off, joined St. Austell Senior Band for a short time on 2nd Euphonium, but gave up due to work and family commitments.  She then had a visit from "Bash" in September 2000 to request her help in playing First Baritone at Torquay Contest for Bugle Band.  She jumped at the chance to "help out" and got bitten by the bug again!  She never left!  She moved to Euphonium in November 2003 and the rest is history!

Jackie has taken (and passed!) many music exams: Piano (grades 3 and 4), Tenor Horn (grades 5, 6 and 8) Music Theory (grade 5) and GCE "O" Level Music (Grade B).  She also played the piano, recorder, clarinet and guitar at school, but brass banding remains her favourite hobby.

Jackie married Alister (percussionist) in 1991, who was playing percussion with the St. Austell B Band where they met in 1988.  He plays anything except brass (although he has tried Trombone and Baritone), and his main instrument is the keyboard which he plays in a band called Jailhouse.

Jackie now works as a dental nurse in St. Austell, and has recently passed her exams.

Memorable banding moment:
September 1988 - Jackie met a new player on Percussion and ended up marrying him!
Playing at the Royal Albert Hall three times: 1982; 1984; 1985.

Why Jackie likes playing in Bugle Silver Band:
Jackie says:
"I enjoy the happy atmosphere and the team effort.  I enjoy the fact that we never take it too seriously but when necessary we pull out all the stops and achieve some good results.
I enjoy the social life attached to the band, and the highlight of the year is the Christmas Party when we all get together and let our hair down, with the boys and girls taking it in turns to provide the entertainment each year!"
